SSDs are read modify write, so setting a file to a bunch of zeros doesnt actually modify the original data, its still there in the nand, its just now that "Sector" points to a different part of the SSD that has the new file with the zeros in it. (this is also how iphones wipe their data too) no structure at all, and no way to ever recover the data. The data on the SSD is now a perfect distribution of random noise. The manufacturer utility just instructs the SSD to wipe that key. The key that encrypts all that data is stored internally to the SSD and is literally the key to reading the data back. Keeping the data random stops cells from degrading if a whole bunch is 1 or 0 ( or 3, or 15), and helps with reading the data back, as it provides the nand controller the range of voltages to effectively recover the data stored. Use the tool from the manufacturer of the SSD.ĪLL (modern) ssds encrypt data written to the flash, not only as its useful for a security standpoint, but it also means that the data written to the flash is much more uniform distribution of 0 and 1, which is fairly important for MLC flash. If it's a 1TB drive and below the TBW warranty, I'll rma it, otherwise, dispose. Found the drive holding up the raid array. However, products like Blancco Drive Eraser are not able to delete individual files or individual folders, as they wipe everything from your hard drive. Low and behold, DD erase either hangs or writes very poor like 2meg/sec. Professional software tools such as Blancco Drive Eraser can overwrite all areas of a drive and eliminate both residual user data and the operating system. If I have a suspect drive or drives in a mirrored OS set, and I don't know which is causing grief but I'm getting lagging writes, I make a best guess on SMART data, yank that out of the array, secure erase, and then erase with DD.

It should be doing the full 400-500 meg/sec. If you suspect the drive might be having write issues, I also hit it with the erase with DD erase for a minute or so, and watch the write speed. It will reset every bit on the flash to zeros. Just got the email a few days ago on a new release too.Īs for wiping the SSD, use the secure erase. It is one of the USBs I carry with me at all times.

I pay the annual sub, for they are always updating drivers for that one off motherboard or raid card drivers that you need when going to a customer / site, and you need to wipe the meta data off a drive and or clone some odd ball. I've used Parted Magic secure erase for so many years, I can't even count.
